This week during my Tuesday Experience was very interesting. My classroom teacher was out sick, so it was me and a sub the whole day. I felt more in charge than ever! It was a great learning opportunity for me to run most of the class. I implemented many of the classroom management strategies that i have learned so far. The class was very well behaved..which helped a lot.
The funny thing is, my blog a little while ago was concerning managing the classroom and connecting to all the students. This past Tuesday, eased my mind a lot and allowing me to feel more confident in the classroom.
I also had the opportunity to go peer review in a first grade classroom. I saw the children practicing a reader's theater, from a book that they have been practicing with. I really enjoyed this, not only was I able to see a different classroom grade level, but witness a reader's theater. I think that acting out the book is a great way for all the children to get involved and really have have with the book. Sometimes its hard to get children interested in reading, but I think this is a great way to start. Also reader's theater is great for children looking more into the characters and the plot. (GREAT JOB ON THE LESSON CHRISTINA!!)

WOW! Tina:
It must have been such an amazing experience to be in charge of the whole class. I know you too thought it was a great experience and a big help in easing some of your concerns regarding classroom management. I was wondering though what you gained from this experience through having to try and manage the whole class. Was it the whole experience itself that helped ease your concerns or the practice of implementing some classroom management skills that you found to work well? I guess what I am wondering is how did you fell trying to manage the whole class and what did you learn about classroom management skills through this experience?
Amazing! I don't know if I would be ready to take over the my class for a whole day, I think I would be a little intimidated. It is cool that it helped boost your confidence.
I learned a lot about classroom management during this experience. It seemed easy when I was watching my teacher do it, until I had to take charge. I didn't try any of my own techniques, since the children were pretty much behaved and they knew the management skills that the teacher had already set for them.
Looking back on the experience, I feel that I was acting more as an equal, rather than a teacher. I was almost afraid to tell the children to quiet down or to stay on task. I don't feel that I did a bad job, just that i could have been more demanding with what I wanted.
The only time that I have been alone with the class was during indoor recess - not exactly a time you want to be alone! The whole class had way too much energy to be cooped up all day long. I was excited to hear about your experience being alone with the class.
You mentioned that could have been more demanding and I am learning from my cooperating teacher that being a friend rather than a strict teacher can prove to be very successful. My teacher very rarely raises his voice or reprimands that class but they still greatly respect him. Everyone has their own approach to classroom management. Seeing our styles unfold throughout student teaching will be so exciting!
Do you think that student teaching in the fall will be more than enough time to prep for being on our own? I sometimes worry that it won't be enough.. I guess I'm just getting anxious!
